Day Laborer’s Center Dedication, Prom Dress Giveaway, and Mother’s Day Flowers

On today’s recording of JustLove, we are taking a moment to celebrate something years in the making – the dedication of the new Catholic Charities Day Laborer’s Center in Yonkers that took place on May 1st. Lucia Goyen, Director of the Day Laborer Program within CCCS, an agency of Catholic Charities New York, has a conversation with us about the importance of this new establishment in the first week of May in honor of Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of Workers. Being May, it’s prom season! Another guest on today’s recording is Samiyah Green, a student at Innovation Diploma Plus High School, who speaks with us about the recent 17th Annual Prom Clothing Giveaway, sponsored by Catholic Charities New York and held at the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center in Washington Heights. To wrap up, we can’t forget about Mother’s Day! Chrissy Stonebraker-Martinez is the Co-Director of the Interreligious Task Force on Central America and Columbia joins us to talk about the universal Mother’s Day gift: flowers. Americans spend almost three billion dollars on flowers per year, and she talks with us about the countries where most of these flowers are grown and harvested, and the working conditions that the floriculture workers operate under.
