Remembering Nagasaki: Faith, Memory, and the Call to Peace

On today’s episode of JustLove – on this day marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki – Monsignor Kevin Sullivan speaks with Professor Peter Kuznick, Professor of History and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University, about the enduring impact of that tragic event. Their conversation focuses on the survivors known as the Nihon Hidankyo (pronounced “Knee-hon Hid-anne-kyo”), recipients of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, whom Prof. Kuznick personally nominated and accompanied to Oslo. Monsignor also reflects on how his parish, Our Savior Church in Midtown Manhattan, has joined the global movement for peace by hosting a 75-hour vigil in partnership with the Community of Sant’Egidio. This powerful act of remembrance brings together diverse faith communities to reflect on the human cost of war, the moral imperative of peace, and how our Catholic faith calls us to respond with compassion, justice, and action in our world today.
