Fast Fashion, Poverty Wages, and Environmental Damage

During this month of Saint Francis when we commemorate the duty we have to care for each other and God’s Creation, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan is joined from Paris by award-winning journalist and author Dana Thomas who will be sharing with us insights best-selling book “Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes” about the true cost of “fast fashion”, and how – since 2013 Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh shone a light on the conditions under which cheap clothing is made –  garment that cost remarkably little to make often hide a much higher price in terms of poverty wages, unsafe working conditions, polluted water and environmental damage, and what things we can do to confront these problems and change them.

On the next episode, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan has a conversation with Prof. Bob Bussel, Ph.D., who is Professor Emeritus of History and the former Director of the Labor Education and Research Center (LERC) at the University of Oregon.  On today’s episode of JustLove – at a time when so many are concerned about the growing income gap in the United States – Prof. Bussel will be sharing with us a bit about growing income inequality, the role of equalizing institutions – like unions – to counter inequality – and the implications of inequality for the health of democracy.
