COVID-19 in the Bronx and Youth Response to George Floyd
On this week’s episode of Just Love, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan talks about health and housing in the Bronx, and how the protests after George Floyd’s death has affected youth in New York.
Professor Diana Hernandez, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Socio-medical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She – a sociologist by training – researches and examines the intersections between the built environment (housing and neighborhoods), and poverty and health. Dr. Hernandez shares with us how and why the COVID-19 outbreak here in New York has had a particularly devastating impact on poor communities of color like the South Bronx where she grew up.
Eddie Silverio is the Director of Youth Services for the Alianza Division of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. Eddie will talk to us about how the Alianza Division has responded and adapted their services to youth in light of the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of former officer Derek Chauvin.
